Planning Your Baby’s Cake Smash Session: Everything You Need to Know
How to prepare, what to expect, and how I make the experience stress-free.

What Do I Need to Know for My Baby’s Cake Smash Session?
If you’re planning your baby’s first birthday cake smash session, you’re probably excited… and maybe a little unsure what to expect.
The good news is that you really don’t have to figure everything out on your own. My cake smash sessions are designed to be collaborative, low-stress, and fun for both you and your baby. From the theme to the cake to the day-of experience, I guide you through each step so all you really have to do is show up and enjoy the moment.
Here’s what the process usually looks like.
Start With a Theme
Every cake smash session begins with a theme.
Some parents come in with a full Pinterest board and a very clear vision. Others just have a color palette or a vibe in mind. Either way works perfectly.
Once we have a direction, I design the set around it. I curate textures, props, colors, and lighting so the setup feels cohesive and intentional rather than thrown together. My goal is always to create a set that feels playful and special while still photographing beautifully.
Choosing the Backdrop and Set Design
After we settle on a theme, I build the set to match.
Sometimes this means a styled backdrop with props, and other times it’s a more minimal design that lets your baby’s personality shine. Either way, everything is planned with the final images in mind so your gallery feels consistent and polished.
You don’t need to worry about bringing decorations unless you want to include something sentimental.
The Cake: We Plan It Together
The cake is one of the most exciting parts, and it’s something we plan together.
All of my cake smash cakes are made by my baking partner, and we design them specifically to match your session. Some families choose a more elaborate “deluxe” design, while others prefer something simple and classic. Both photograph beautifully, and we’ll choose what fits your theme and style best.
The goal is a cake that looks amazing but is also safe and baby-friendly for smashing.
Outfits and Styling Help
Outfits are another thing I’m happy to help with.
Whether you want something soft and neutral, playful and colorful, or themed to match the set, I can guide you toward options that photograph well and keep your baby comfortable.
You don’t have to stress about styling, we’ll figure it out together.
Scheduling the Session
Most cake smash sessions are scheduled about two weeks before your baby turns one.
This gives me time to edit and deliver your photos so you have them ready to share on their actual birthday. We’ll collaborate on a date and time that works for your baby’s routine and energy levels.
How to Prepare Your Baby for the Day
The biggest preparation tip is simple:
- Try to have your baby well rested
- Let them be a little hungry, but not overly upset
- Bring something for them to drink in case the icing gets thick or sticky
That’s really it. You don’t need to bring anything complicated.
What Happens During the Session
I always start by working with your baby’s temperament and comfort level. Some babies dive right into the cake. Others need time to explore, warm up, or watch what’s happening first.
My job is to read their cues and keep the experience positive. The goal isn’t to push them past their tolerance threshold, it’s to help them engage naturally and have a happy experience.
I guide the session so we capture:
- curiosity
- smiles
- messy hands
- sweet expressions
- playful reactions
All the little moments that make this stage so memorable.
Full Smashes vs Petite Smashes
I offer two different cake smash formats.
Full Cake Smash Sessions include time for pre-cake portraits first. These are great for capturing clean milestone photos before the fun begins.
Petite Cake Smash Sessions start with the cake right away and are shorter, spending about half the time. These are perfect if you mainly want the messy, playful part documented.
Both options result in beautiful images.. it just depends on what kind of experience you want.
And About the Mess…
Every parent apologizes for the mess. Every single time.
I promise you: that’s part of what you’re paying me for.
Your baby gets to explore, smash, taste, and make a joyful mess while you enjoy the moment. I handle the cleanup so you don’t have to stress about it.
The mess is part of the story and honestly, part of the fun.
The Goal of the Session
At the end of the day, a cake smash session isn’t really about the cake.
It’s about celebrating your baby’s first year, capturing their personality at this fleeting stage, and giving you images that will always remind you what they were like right now.
I handle the planning, the design, the setup, and the cleanup so you can focus on soaking in the moment.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a cake smash session, I’d love to help you create something fun, personal, and memorable for your baby’s first birthday.
